Support for professionals

We recognise that professionals who work with children and young people might come across self-harming behaviour.

Our training and resources are designed to upskill staff and build a culture of understanding and proactive support.

What we offer

The experienced Solent Mind training team will be offering live online training to equip you with the knowledge, skills and tools to support young people you work with who may self-harm.

Training will be accompanied by a toolkit of resources to use in your work.

Training sessions

Solent Mind is delivering a range of training sessions:

  • Self-harm awareness (1 hour) - basic understanding and improving confidence
  • Self-harm awareness (3 hours) - more in depth understanding of self-harm, suicide awareness and intervention skills. Techniques to build resilience.
  • Reflective practice (1 hour) - a chance to share with peers.

Who the sessions are for?

  • Education providers – secondary school age children and young people (11 years and over), 6th form and further education.
  • Charities working directly with children and young people in this age range.

Does the training cost anything?

No, it will be free for you to attend.

This training is funded by NHS England, commissioned by Hampshire County Council.

Self-harm awareness training (1 hour)

Session overview

This session aims to improve confidence and reduce fear around the topic of self-harm for those who work with children and young people. We’ll cover the basics of what self-harm is and what it isn’t, to enable understanding and awareness. We’ll also suggest strategies, resources and signposting to support those self-harming, and the people around them.

Each session runs for 1 hour and will be delivered remotely via Zoom. After the session you will receive a link to a recorded version of the session for you to watch again at another time.

During these sessions we will reference a range of free resources including signposting to other organisations offering further support.

Self-harm awareness training (3 hours)

Online via Zoom or in-person on Wednesday 12 February 2025 (Southampton venue TBC)

The 3-hour training session will be more in-depth, building knowledge and understanding. It is suitable for those who have attend the 1 hour session and/or already have some knowledge.

Session overview

A more in-depth session, giving a deeper understanding of self-harm, as well as suicide awareness and intervention skills. We will also share techniques for building resilience both for educational professionals and the young people they support.

Reflective practice
(1 hour)

Reflective practice sessions offer a chance to share your knowledge and experience about what’s been helpful in supporting children and young people that experience self-harm and learn from others.

This is not a training session; it will be a guided discussion with opportunity for group conversation and reflection.

Session overview

This session aims to give attendees the chance to share and learn from their peers.

Solent Mind will facilitate the session, it will be an opportunity to discuss what has been helpful/worked well in supporting children and young people who self-harm (or may potentially be at risk of self-harm behaviours).

We’ll end the session with a reflection on self-care and the importance of looking after yourself.
